BETWEEN FRIENDS
a
few years ago, the
word “staycation”
entered our vocabu-
lary, as people started
cutting travel to save money. At
first, vacations at home felt, well,
like a compromise. But we soon
discovered that there’s a lot to like
about a break that’s low-stress,
inventive, and lets you sleep with
your own pillow under your head.
In the spirit of staycation, this issue’s mission statement
reads Summer Fun. We’ve collected tons of tips for easygoing
get-togethers,
page 83,
and backyard play for kids,
page 223.
We asked a pair of all-star grillers for their best show-off
recipes,
page 161.
And when best-selling author Mary Kay
Andrews-known for her entertaining women’s books set in
the South-invited us to photograph her beach cottage on
page 36,
we went in a flash. We left with sand in our shoes and
pages of the casual summer style you love.
As I read through this issue’s pages, I made a pledge to put
more “staycation” in my own summer. True, Scott and I make
time for plenty of outdoor activities-the cookouts, a little
kayaking, meals on the deck. But I sometimes skip the most
important part. And that’s the promise to, for a meaningful
block of time, disconnect from my everyday life and soak up
the pure joy of summer.
When we do that, even a single Saturday can be a refresh-
ing break. And who couldn’t use a little more of that?
